Comments about PBS Rough Cut - Woodworking with Tommy Mac: Season 2, Potting Station (DVD + Printed Plans):
The presentation was very inspiring & I thought I could save time by ordering the DVD & plans. The dvd was the exact same as the tv broadcast & no 'special features' were included. On the dvd, Tommy said that you can build the bench from 1x8 stock, however the 2 of the 3 side pieces are supposed to be 8" wide, & 1x8 is only 7.5". Having to modify the plans, for the shelf braces, was inconvenient & not welcome for the [$] price tag (including shipping).Additionally, they didn't tell you how many boards to buy, or the most economical way to cut them up. I figured it out, but expected a shopping list, & cutting diagram to be a part of the plans along with a cut list.A personal modification is pocket screws for the exposed horizontal pieces so rain doesn't collect in screw holes.Another consideration is that when you give pbs your e-mail, you will receive frequent purchase offers.Again, it's a quality bench (4.5 stars) & it goes together fairly easily, but the plans are not of the caliber that the targed audience (woodworkers) would expect.
