In 1877, the Ponca people were exiled from their Nebraska homeland to Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma. To honor his dying son's last wish to be buried in his homeland, Chief Standing Bear set off on a grueling, six-hundred-mile journey home. Captured en-route, Standing Bear sued a famous U.S. army general for his freedom--choosing to fight injustice not with weapons, but with words.

Comments about PBS Standing Bear's Footsteps DVD:

Hello! I saw the "Standing Bear's Footsteps" documentary again and it really touches my heart for this GREAT MAN. I hear through the Native grapevine that Nebraska is proclaiming a state holiday in honor of the GREATEST CHIEF. I think this is great. How about petitioning President Obama in making oh,say, maybe May12 National Chief Standing Bear Day in all 50 states. It would be a good date cause it's in the Spring and it was just a number i picked out of my head. Thank You, Eileen Ryan, A Friend To My PONCAS.

Comments about PBS Standing Bear's Footsteps DVD:

I am a student of Native American history and never have I read about a Greater Man than Chief Standing Bear. This MAN should have a national holiday in Honor of him. He did more for American Indians than anybody. Let's petition President Obama to have a holiday for Chief Standing Bear. Not just a holiday in Nebraska or the annual powwow in Oklahoma. Let's make this the year of STANDING BEAR!Hear that,Judi? I'm not giving up!!! Eileen Ryan, A COMPASSIONATE FRIEND OF THE PONCAS.
