Comments about PBS San Francisco Ballet Presents the Little Mermaid Blu-ray:
John Neumeier reinterprets H.C.Andersen's timeless fable with originality and wit. Inserting The Poet into the action enlightens and unifies, with superb dancing and miming (a la Marcel Marceau) by Hamburg's Lloyd Riggins! Korean-born Yuan Yuan Tan is as Little Mermaid, delicate as a porcelain figurine, yet possesses enough stamina to endure nearly 2 1/2 hours of grueling acting and dancing. She LIVES her tragic part. The Prince, Tiit Helmets, a rising star in Europe, is a handsome, witty and impressively strong dancer. Lera Auerbach's music, while richly atmospheric, is certainly not hummable. The ballet - as much acting as dancing and the more powerful because of it - could benefit from being a bit shorter. In the unvarnished original, Andersen has his lovelorn siren's every step with unfamilar human feet feel like treading on shards of glass. The pain of unrequited boundles, unconditional love has never been more grippingly told - or danced. I shall treasure this performomance for the rest of my life. G.S., M.D.
