The Modoc War of 1872 was one of the costliest American Indian wars in U.S. history. For seven months, a handful of Modoc Indian warriors and their families held off hundreds of U.S. Army soldiers. The international press took notice and people were enthralled as one of the last real-life Wild West battles unfolded on the American frontier. Again and again, the small band of Indians overcame incredible odds to protect their way of life.

Great Coverage of Little Known War

Comments about PBS Oregon Experience: The Modoc War DVD:

Excellent coverage of a little known war that for all practical purposes was won by a small band of Modoc Indians against the U.S. Army. Treaty conditions were not kept the Grant administration and illegal settlers were allowed to overrun the Modoc's historic lands. The war would have not taken place if the Modoc were allowed their own reservation instead of the U.S. offering them sharing a reservation with their historic enemy. I would highly recommend this DVD to any person with an interest in U.S. history.

Comments about PBS Oregon Experience: The Modoc War DVD:

This documentary is so well done, Kami. I loved seeing Lynn Schonchin, from whom I had often heard stories about his Modoc ancestors and the history of the Modoc War. You have put together the true, but often untold, story of this vital part in America's history. I loved hearing from Taylor Tupper and listening to the others tell of their ancestors' part in this historical event. I loved having you as a student at Chiloquin High and remember all of the fun times we had going to Speech contests all over the state of Oregon. I truly am proud of you! What a wonderful accomplishment...a true and accurate account of the Modoc War. I have many times been to the Lava Beds and loved reading the history presented there, but this documentary does such a better job of telling the story. Congratulations! I have bought two copies: one for me and one as a gift.
