In 1911, a small liberal arts college was launched in Portland, Oregon with its sole mission to promote the life of the mind. Founded by a prominent minister and brought to life by a visionary young upstart president, Reed College soon became a well-regarded institution of higher learning nationally but also something of a lightning rod for criticism locally.

Dramatically told history

Comments about PBS Oregon Experience: Reed DVD:

This documentary greatly exceeded my expectations for a documentary of this type. It compellingly and dramatically tackled the timeless core aspects of Reed College's ethos as well as many crucial periods in its 100-year history; e.g., the political backlash during WWI caused by its president's pacifism, McCarthyism, the rise of the Beats, the Vietnam War, and the push for a black studies curriculum. It unblinkably confronts the failures and disappointments Reed encountered, not just the high points and victories.

I highly recommend it if you've ever attended Reed, know anyone who has, or you or someone you know might contemplate attending in the future.
