The characters grab you without you even knowing it until it's too late because before you can realilze what has happened, you are hooked, drawn in as if by some spell has been placed upon you but it's not a spell, but rather the excellent writing, the compelling plot and sub-plots, the depth of the characters, the wit and hunour that weaves itself like a tapestry (via the solid acting of it's performers) as we are allowed in through the front door to observe the lives of those who live at Downton Abbey. This is what excellent acting and writing does, it gets you, the viewer, involved with the characters. For those of you who have not yet witnessed this subperb series, you don't know what you are missing but hopefully you will catch on and watch what is an excellent series. Personally, I can't wait for the 2nd season.

My husband and I have watched this series since the beginning and it is wonderful! The acting, the location, the history and above all the english language. We cannot wait for the 3rd part of this wonderful series to begin.

Count me an addict to this series, due to its theme of Honor, whether upstairs or down. DVD of Season 1 is fabulous, far better than the Season 1 I downloaded through [@]. (So yes, I have two sets, now. Get the DVD, not the download.)DVD I purchased from PBS, is uncut UK edition. Not blu-ray, not US edition (the latter, was the download). Wonderful. The series helps you 'live' the times. The meaning of honor in everything, however silly or small. True, societal norms were often pettifogging, hypocritical, petty, greedy. So the OBJECTS of honor were often wrongly chosen. But the IDEA of honor, was popular, however badly observed. That's why we are attracted to this time: it does the soul good, to HONOR.The book 'The World of Downton Abbey' is far better than I expected. What I expected, was yet another dry tome on life at the turn of the century; but it was a PBS book, so I thought, 'well, at least the money helps support PBS'. Was I ever WRONG! The book is worth more than its price!The book tracks the series, explains what's beneath what you see on-screen, replete with many high-quality stills from the series. Explanations are tailored in the characters' names, so you can more easily relate the information, to what you see on-screen. So you better know what in moviemaker circles is called, 'the backstory'. So you live it, as you read.Very happy customer, here. Addicted forever.

Positively the finest Television ever produced. The script is the best I have ever heard. The production, and the Cinema-Photography are flawless.The background mood music is also flawless!

The acting by everyone in the cast could not be any better. Congratulations to all in this production for they're performances, to the producers for the efforts afforded this whole production, and the melding of Parts 1&2 together so as to provide the viewer the joy of watching the whole production as if it had not been interrupted .
