John Le Carre's intense thriller was the basis for this riveting six-part series about master spy George Smiley, brought back from Cold War retirement to ferret out a high-ranking mole in the British Secret Service. Sir Alec Guinness plays Smiley, weary yet resolute, on the trail of a traitor. Costars include Ian Richardson, Michael Aldridge, and Joss Ackland. "A smashing thriller," promises the New York Times.

The expansion of detail and drama in the TV version of TTSS compared to the 2011 movie is a rewarding experience, in fact it deepens your understanding of this labyrinthine work. Obviously, the next step is to read the novel but the visual art form here really does its work. An unexpected bonus is the ending musical passage during the credits, a haunting piece by composer Geoffrey Burgon--for each episode.

I'm not sure why I just could not get with this series. Other PBS mysteries have always made me want to watch them two or three times. So I considered their purchase an investment. This is not the case here. I will re-watch it but only so I get my money's worth.

this is a great story, keeps you on the edge of your seat. and of course the acting is first rate.
i highly recommend it for anybody who likes suspense and action for the brain and not just blowing up buildings and cars for the sake of action. this DVD is like most of PBS drama's which is drama for the mind. excellent acting.

What skill and subtlety Alec Guinness brings to this film! His characterization reveals all the mastery of his craft, distilled and refined over so many years of being in the theatre and just living a gifted life.
