Comments about PBS Masterpiece Mystery!: Agatha Christie's Poirot The Movie Collection Set 1-6 DVD Combo:
I agree with many things said by Anglophile Extraordinaire. But here's one thing to keep in mind: Agatha Christie's Poirot series did become darker in the later books. Maybe this is what Anglophile notices in the newer movie sets. Anyway, new movies--new excuses to watch the brilliant David Suchet.
Comments about PBS Masterpiece Mystery!: Agatha Christie's Poirot The Movie Collection Set 1-6 DVD Combo:
My local PBS station used to run an abbreviated (90-minute shows edited down to one hour) episode of "Poirot" every Saturday night. It became a ritual to devote that time to watching David Suchet become Poirot through his nuances of facial expressions, body language, the "speaking of the English" with his excellent rendering of a Belgian accent. Capt. Hastings and Miss Lemon are the shining characters revolving around the world of Poirot.
A nice thing about the original series in the 1980s / 1990s is the lack of violence. We know a murder has happened, often see the body, but without gory visuals. (The latest Poirot "movies" shown on Masterpiece Mystery—specifically "Murder on the Orient Express"— are much darker and, I'm sorry to say, a bit too bloody. Oh well. (The "travelogue" with David Suchet riding the route of the real Orient Express is one of the best of its kind I've ever seen. The DVD used to be sold on this site but I don't see it offered as a stand-alone product.)
So I will be purchasing this set to continue my ritual, indulge in the unabridged episodes, and watch my favorite actor practice the long lost art of unadulterated acting.
