The Fabric of the Cosmos, based on the book by physicist and author Brian Greene, takes us to the frontiers of physics to see how scientists are piecing together the most complete picture yet of space, time and the universe. With each step, audiences will discover that just beneath the surface of our everyday experience lies a world we'd hardly recognize, a startling world far stranger and more wondrous than anyone expected.

I just finished watching "The Illusion of Time," which is Part II of this astonishing series, and I have to say that it was some of the most utterly mind-bending television I've ever seen in my life. Trying to wrap my brain around the nature of time itself is one helluva mental workout, but if anyone can explain the concept of time in understandable terms, it's Brian Greene and this program.

When Brian Greene and his associates try to explain the meaning of Quantum Mechanics, (Quantum Leap), they fall far short of clarifying the issues for the layman. The feeling I get is that they are traveling in the subways of Mathematical models, (which are totally logical), without a logical explanation of the results. This left me totally adrift. So much so I started to feel I am viewing a Harry Potter story rather than a Scientific dissertation on a theory.

I wanted to hear more about the thinking of Niels Bohr, and Schroedinger and how they arrived at their theories.
Also Probabilities are often thought of as magical rather than mathematical definitions. A roulette wheel is
often described as a Probabilistic machine and if you are a gambler it is certainly useful to think of it that way. However, if one knows the complete set of initial conditions and a complete mechanical definition of the
wheel, a rather simple Newtonian model of the throw would predict the outcome with certainty every time.
If a gambler could perform the modeling in his mind quick enough, that is what he would do and he would win every throw.

My point is Probabilities can produce simple models that are certainly useful, but they are not the total story. Finally I remain unconvinced that the Physics can be totally described by Probabilities.

Sorry for being so wordy.

Comments about PBS NOVA: The Fabric of the Cosmos DVD:

Theoretical physics can be a little 'out there'. Needless to say I found him to be somewhat boring. Special effects were good.

Comments about PBS NOVA: The Fabric of the Cosmos DVD:

So much information - theories I have never heard of - presented with everyday examples. I've seen this series on PBS and ordered it to be able to
play parts over and over. With technology our understanding of how time and gravity work is changing and our view of the Universe has become much more specific and exciting. I could only take in one subject at a time - a lot to process. Love it!

Comments about PBS NOVA: The Fabric of the Cosmos DVD:

The fabric of the cosmos in a way to begin to understand the other realities that are present in everyday life; just either too big or too small for us to even realise their presence. Written so that your ten year old can attempt to explain to you what it is that you are watching. Just like he does with your computer.
