We watched this delightful programme on PBS but had missed part of the first one, so decided that we'd buy it and add to our collection of "will always want to watch it again" items!
This is a complete delight, not too predictable and Anna Maxwell Martin who plays Sarah is fabulous.
Certainly an eye opener to the plight of the working class in the 30's. Sarah Burton was ahead of her time. I wonder if the authur based her character on a 'real' person. I hope so, it would be lovely to think that women like this really did exist in such tough times; and especially tough for forward thinking women.

I bought South Riding because I wanted to see it again! The acting was wonderful, the story relevant to today. Very special story told beautifully.

As a History Teacher and period Masterpiece Classic connoisseur, I quickly fell in love with this production. There are unpredictable twists and turns at the most unexpected of places within this well written, delightfully refreshing period drama. The unfailing attention to detail, particularly to historical facts (many writers these days destroy abysmally, even with the instantaneous access to accurate information) along with the portrayal of global historical events' impact upon the plights of the struggling commoner and aristocracy alike, is most enjoyable. The characters' inner turmoils are exceedingly well developed in such a convincing fashion that you find yourself truly empathizing with their "lots" in life. The locations are stunning as well!!! I hope and pray that we might be afforded future installments of this wonderful tale of true life, love, death, and the will to perservere despite any and all odds...ENJOY!!!!!! : )
