Stonewall Uprising explores the dramatic event that launched a worldwide rights movement. When police raided a Mafia-run gay bar in Greenwich Village, the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969, gay men and women did something they had not done before: they fought back. As the streets of New York erupted into violent protests and street demonstrations, the collective anger announced that the gay rights movement had arrived.

I so remember recalling those days!

Comments about PBS American Experience: Stonewall Uprising DVD:

Yes, when first I was spending my own earlier days of living life as an openly gay male in this world surrounding us here, and sharing time with my own dear sister who as it so happens equally so turned out to be a lesbian too where she was living with her partner up in Ohio too, she'd take me out with her to their local gay pubs that she and hers would frequent. They were back then, in the earlier days of my own openly gay life sometime around the mid 70's or so that is, her gay pubs were exactly as described within this movie too, which sadly reminded me ever so of those days of yore here then too back then, as is so sure that this movie actually draws upon our own historical truths that it so wonderfully shares and reminds us all of a time best to be so never forgotten lest it become repeated as never had oughta be, else once again shall the police and all those be found taking over our world out here too then if so. I just had my own first kind of an objection to my being an openly gay man in this world I inhabit down here in good ole Texas too, which so shocked me and nearly made me recall a time that had become all but forgotten due to how distant that past has so gratefullly here become for so many of us here due to how so thankfully as well it is that those moments when they'd have that as a possibility to act on those things in such ways, had become all but forgotten! But thankfully so too, or is it really either, as this movie helps remind us as to how thoroughly valued are those precious times we've had gone through to enable this day and age we now find ourselves living in rather than that one there too! If for no other reason, this movie is more valued and precious to me personally than really one can adequately enough tell or share or say adequately nearly enough or often enough either here, trust me on that one big old time!

A Triumph for Civil Rights!

Comments about PBS American Experience: Stonewall Uprising DVD:

In a society that enshrines justice for all, there is no such thing as almost equal! The human and civil right to the expression of love between two consenting adults is always and only the jurisdiction of those adults - no others! The Stonewall Uprising represents the moment when a group of citizens decided to finally and forcefully take and then own forever their full measure of civil rights so long denied to them by fear, paralyzing bigotry and religious persecution. They were no longer interested in debate or persuasion. They discovered that they did not owe any explanation or justification to anyone. They were no longer capable of accepting second-class citizenship. This is not a story about sex or sexuality. It is a story about the beginning of the end of the tyranny of viscious ignorance. As such, it is a story of America at it's best.

Vivid, real history - excellent.

Comments about PBS American Experience: Stonewall Uprising DVD:

Young people and even most adults today have a hard time imagining the totally oppressive society that existed for "homosexuals" before Stonewall. Even the word "gay" was still secret code. The old phrase, "the love that dares not speak it's name" was painfully accurate, in ways that are nearly incomprehensible today. This documentary excellently captures that time, both in fact and tone. It presents its story vividly, with a narrative momentum that always points toward the culminating event -- the Stonewall Riots themselves. It then presents what happened at the riots with detailed accuracy, including living-history accounts from both the rioters and the policemen actually involved. This documentary is particularly strong in exploring the fascinating historical question of "Why this moment?". Why did this insignificant police raid, like thousands of others at that time all over the country, become such a transforming event in gay history? If you have any interest in gay history, or even just the history of the 1960's, you'll be riveted.

A Triumph for The American Experience

Comments about PBS American Experience: Stonewall Uprising DVD:

Every American, and the country as a whole, would benefit from viewing this great production. As a straight member of the Board of the Bay State Stonewall Democrats, I am only too well aware of how little the average American knows about the history of the LGBT community and their struggle for equal rights. Stonewall Uprising is an important step in beginning to educate the general public.
