Not a great fan of this series. I wish Prof. Gates would have spoken to a few ordinary Dominicans - except for one brief comment from a musician, all the commentators were from the university. Also, I would have found it more credible if the names of the towns were actually pronounced correctly - or even close. Nagua, for example is pronounced nah gwah, not na goo ah. I understand this is about "Black in Latin America" but it seems as though Gates would have Dominicans deny their Spanish heritage.

Comments about PBS Black in Latin America DVD:
Black in Latin America - Wonderful exploration into the African Diaspora. Every episode is a revelation. Africans in Mexico?! Who knew? Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr.Gates. Your team is fantastic at sourcing credible experts as well as talking to normal people, a good mix. PBS kudos to you for another well produced Docu-series. I will buy it for sure.
Comments about PBS Black in Latin America DVD:
Despite its abbreviated look at the black experience in Latin America, all 4 episodes are quite intriguing. My favorite are the Brazil DVD and then it's a tie between the workout copies of the Dominican Republic and Cuba.
Being of Brazilian ancestry, though born in San Francisco, the sobering read on Brazil's racial divide was worth at least 5-6 viewings. I have never experienced the discrimination though I definitely look Brazilian.
However, I suppose I do also look like I'm an American business person.
Comments about PBS Black in Latin America DVD:
A fascinating look at the oft-forgotten black constituents in the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Haiti, Peru and Mexico.

An awesome series! A very thought provking documentary which makes you want to learn more about the how the African Slave trade has further evolved other nations and cultures.
