This is a fabulous video documentary of Gustav Mahler, one of the truly great composers of all time. The musical performances are moving and the insights of M.L. Thomas are fascinating.
Comments about PBS Keeping Score: Season 3: Gustav Mahler DVD:
Thomas's introduction to Mahler's work and life, especially what local musical sources influenced Mahler, helped me hear the 1st Symphony at a whole new level. Thomas is a good teacher and a wonderful conductor. It's a joy to watch him conduct--minimalist, sensitive, emotional, precise, loves his orchestra and the music they make. Visually, the cameras on the performance were spot-on.

Inspired by Johannes Kepler (1571 – 1630), we could say that the movements of a symphony are nothing but a continuous song for several instruments perceived by the ear. However, their performance have to be done deeply inspired by the heart to reveal all their beauty.
The magnificent performance of San Francisco Symphony conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas offer the opportunity to the listeners to fully enjoy Mahler's rich, complex and yet beautiful work.
