Before there were automobiles, there were streetcars. They provided cheap, comfortable public transportation, allowing people to work and play further from home. The streetcar lines formed the streets and neighborhoods that make up our cities today. Now, streetcars are making a comeback.

Portlanders need to be more aware of the rich rail history that our area has ... on a per capita basis, no other area comes close!

STREETCAR CITY

Comments about PBS Oregon Experience: Streetcar City DVD:

It was an excellent program even though I had watched it before on TV. Honestly, the program could been longer and I would have been happy. It brought back so many pleasant memories. I rode on the 23rd line most days (instead of the electric bus) to go to school. One of the pictures even showed one marked for the 23 line. It was, I think, the last save for the Council Crest streetcar, to be replaced. This doesn't count the Oregon City line. That streetcar was fun way to travel to Oaks Park.
