I was frankly annoyed to learn from another reviewer that the British version of "Any Human Heart" had "more sex" than the edited American version PBS chose to broadcast. I am very tired of the prudish and infantile censorship foisted upon those of us who are adults (and can handle sexual content as adults) by those who are embarrassed by, and ashamed of, such material. I believe, furthermore, that their view is a wrongheaded one that should not be allowed first consideration. What is perhaps equally galling is that PBS, which I support with my financial contributions, should cater to the belief that sex is not beautiful unless concealed, is always gratuitous, and/or has no redeeming virtue in entertainment. While PBS has always stood for good taste, it is time that it also stands up for freedom of expression in promoting the idea that sex is not anathema to decency.

Acting and production values are great, Masterpiece Theatre up to its usual high standards. Be forewarned: unbelievably depressing and somewhat maudlin. And our protagonist drinks enough alcohol to pickle an elephant's liver. Between that and sleeping with an assortment of mostly uninteresting women, it's hard to really empathize, and ultimately sympathize, with the main character. We start with an interesting man who shows promise but who instead devolves into a clownish and diluted echo of his former self. Look past the production values and there's not much to hang on to.

Any Human Heart -- I saw it first on PBS and had to see it again, and again. Bought it for my mother who is in a nursing home.
Truly elegant character acting, film editing, and storytelling at its best. "The personal is political." This story touches the heart and leaves a permanent wound that also heals. Reminds us we are all connected.
We need more such stories in our dehumanized time. Kudos to the author, the director and actors. Thank you for bringing the book to life.

Interesting story and excellent acting. Somewhat of a highbrow soap opera. We bought it because we were interrupted when it showed on our PBS station. Lots of sex.

Just plain entertaining. I'm fasinated by the lives and circumstances people find themselves in other time frames and other countries. Most of us have to live awhile before we make better decisions.
