Known everywhere as the quintessential American cultural identity, westerns filled small screens across the country night after night and were some of the most successful television shows in history. This episode also examines the popularity of "Bonanza" and the creation of the classic series "Gunsmoke" with James Arness -- one of the longest-running television series of all time.

Comments about PBS Pioneers of Television: Westerns DVD:

I very much enjoyed this DVD. The interviews with the actors were fun to watch as well as the clips from various shows.
I hope you do a second one and include shows like "Wagon Train", "Tales of Wells Fargo", "Have Gun Will Travel" etc.

Comments about PBS Pioneers of Television: Westerns DVD:

Wow. Just watched "Pioneers of Television: Westerns" that I had recorded this week. Amazing piece of work. If you're a person around age 50 and grew up on TV and the Westerns, this program is nothing short of spectacular. The original footage and back-stories are so beautiful. And I defy anyone who truly loved these shows and that era to watch this program and not have a tear in your eye.
To see the wonderful actors then and some now is moving. Thank you PBS for this wonder slice of Americana. At it's best. When we were possibly at our best. I'll be ordering my copy tonight.
