This is one of the best new series in years. Intriguing, mysterious and humourous, it succeeds at every level with classy writing, innovative direction and great acting. It's true to the vision created by Doyle and brilliantly translated into the new century.
May the BBC keep it going.

I've seen enough of these to understand that they are little better than the old "Holmes" stories made in the 1940s, although they do not get it quite as wrong. The only Sherlock Holmes worth watching is the series starring Jeremy Brett, produced in the 1980s. The technology makes these new attempts cute, and Cumberbatch is interesting, but no, no no. Jeremy Brett's Holmes remains the gold standard among all Sherlock Holmes productions, and that will remain the same long after Cumberbatch has moved on to other things. Brett is absolutely brilliant in his interpretation of Holmes, in which role he manifests the fictional detective pefectly from the pages of the stories. The newer ones are interesting, but quite entirely unnecessary. The Brett interpretations preserve the literacy and the literary quality of Conan Doyle's work. Jeremy Brett and his two Watsons rule this domain and it will be a long time before anyone can justify any claim to the contrary.

Comments about PBS Masterpiece Mystery!: Sherlock Season 1 DVD (Original U.K. Unedited Edition):
This modern-day adaptation of the Conan Doyle characters nicely conveys the humour Conan Doyle wrote into the character of Holmes - something lacking in the Jeremy Brett interpretation of the character.
The pace is fast, the dialogue is intelligent, and the acting is absolutely superb. You can't help but be both stimulated and completely entertained by this series, whether you're a 'Sherlock' fan or not!!

If you liked the original Sherlock Holmes or not, I garuntee you will like this one better. It's set in modern day and it's absolutley brilliant. However, it's very fast paced so pay attention and put the subtitles on. Amazing plots, a fresh prespective on Sherlock, and the best (and most addicting) show you will ever see in this lifetime. Enjoy!
