In 1968 the Soviet ballistic missile submarine K-129 sank in the Central North Pacific. American intelligence located it within weeks of its demise. The CIA crafted a secret program to raise the submarine in 1974. Now after much secrecy, this story can be told, by the men who made it happen and with never-before-seen footage of the actual salvage attempt, and new evidence of the project's successes and failures.

I just got the DVD this morning and watched all of it. As someone who joined the program in late 1974 it was really great to see the details of the part I missed. The sources are the real guys. The details are the real thing. The computer graphics finally let everyone see how the total system really worked. I will be sure that my friends and family finally get to see what we were up to.

I also bought the book. It is rather dry and somewhat glosses over the ship operations. But it has useful background info if you were not part of the program. The video, on the other hand is about as good as you could possibly expect.

The book, "A Matter of Risk", is also a great reference and I still remember my Paul Ito briefing.

Azorian covers the technological aspects of the secret mission very well and doesn't leave the viewer wanting in that regard. I think more could have been covered about the background to the mission as the K-129 submarine itself and the actual process of finding it. Overall it's very interesting but how one might rate will likely depend on what one is looking for.

I recall much of the "flap" over the oil rig in the middle of the Pacific and the cost to the US for its "exploration". Found this very insightful on the true use of Mr.Hughes ship.

Comments about PBS Azorian: The Raising of the K-129 DVD:

My husband was a member of the Glomar Explorer crew that attempted to bring up the Russian sub. It is the most factual footage he has seen. Enjoyed. He has 5 sons we bought copies for them as a Christmas gift this year. If we can keep it a secret that long.

Comments about PBS Azorian: The Raising of the K-129 DVD:

Although there are tell-all books about the attempt to rise the K-129, the book by Norm Polmar described the operation in much greater detail. The video bring the operation to life, with participants describing in dramatic detail the thrills and disappointment of the team as they worked long hours and coped with great intellectual challenges to accomplish seemingly impossible feats. The result was both satisfying and disappointing. Hearing them tell it is a real thrill.
